Many people with Down syndrome would like to achieve greater independence and pursue personal goals such as developing new life skills and meaningful employment opportunities.
Providing an adult with Down syndrome with a mentor is a way to support and assist them to develop and work towards fulfilling their future hopes and dreams. It offers an opportunity for exposure to new life experiences and enables them to seek advice and support from someone with different life experiences to their own.
On 18 June 2008 Mentoring Connections: an initiative for adults with Down syndrome was launched at William Angliss Institute. This pilot program was funded by the Victorian Department of Human Services and The Jack Brockhoff Foundation.

The pilot program concluded with a presentation evening at the Hawthorn Football Club during December 2008 . It is anticipated that mentoring will continue on as part of the broader Down Syndrome Victoria Adult Support strategy in the future. A final report on the pilot program is due by March 2009.
