Hospital or home visit

One of the most successful ways of supporting new parents is through contact with another parent who has been through a similar experience.

Our Family Support Coordinator Sue Blandford is also a parent of a child with Down syndrome, and is available to visit families at home or in hospitals in the Melbourne Metropolitan area when a baby with Down syndrome is born.

With the parents permission, Sue can attend the hospital/home and will offer positive advice, information and support to help parents to come to terms with the diagnosis. A positive start to life with a new baby can make all the difference to a familie's sense of wellbeing.

Sue can also provide continuity of care and support for families, if desired, through ongoing telephone support and referal.

Regional families are offered phone support and can be put in contact with a family and/or a support group in their area if they wish.

Sometimes new parents are not ready for a visit but would like to receive information. A New Parent Pack can be mailed to families if they prefer and personal contact can be left to a later date when they feel ready.
