Buddy Walk is an international walk-a-thon style event aimed at raising funds for and awareness of Down syndrome. There are more than 260 Buddy Walks all around the world. In Australia, walks coincide with Down Syndrome Awareness Week in Adelaide, Sydney, Brisbane, Perth, Newcastle, Wollongong, Wagga Wagga and, for the first time in 2009, Canberra and MELBOURNE!

Buddy Walk brings together people with Down syndrome and their invited ‘buddies’ – everyone from friends and family to teachers, politicians and co-workers – to promote acceptance and inclusion of people with Down Syndrome and to raise funds for education, support and advocacy programs.

Members of the public are invited to walk too, to demonstrate their support for inclusion of people with Down syndrome in the community. Volunteers are needed on the day, and donations are appreciated either in person on the day or via our website.

Buddy Walk Melbourne will be held on Sunday 11^th October 2009. The 3km walk around Princes Park in Carlton North will start at 10am. Registration from 8am. Map.

Weather permitting, groups should bring picnic provisions for lunch after the walk. A sausage sizzle and entertainment will be provided. The Buddy Walk will go ahead regardless of weather.

How to get there

Fundraising:

Each person with Down syndrome is sponsored by as many people as possible, which raises money for Down Syndrome Victoria. In order to raise funds, participants can create a Hero Page via the BuddyWalk.org.au website. A Hero Page is a special website that's accessible to your family, friends and colleagues. You can share a special message of inspiration, start a blog, share an image or video; and raise funds for Down Syndrome Victoria.

Anyone is invited to make donations and leave a message of support to the person with Down syndrome doing the fundraising. Donations are tallied and displayed for everyone to see. Donations are automatically processed, receipted and transferred to Down Syndrome Victoria.
